Year 2/3

Welcome to the Year 2/3 class webpage

Our teachers are Mrs Marie Geurts and Mrs Katie Mann and our classroom is in the Northern Territory block. Mrs Mann will return in Semester Two.

Homework:- Our homework is sent out on a Monday and is due in on a Friday each week. This consists of a homework grid with the weeks spelling words and other tasks listed on it and a separate sheet with maths questions on it.

Exercise;- On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the children start the day with exercises which involve various physical activities such as warm up and stretching , skipping, jogging, ball handling, and other coordination activities. On thursday they have a special P.E lesson and Friday they have Interhouse Team Sport.

Literacy Groups:- Monday to Thursday our class has Literacy rotations from 9.15- 10.40. The children are organised into small groups and they are involved in activities such as the Rainbow Reading Program, Guided Reading, PM Readers on the computer, the Cars and Stars Program as well as grammar, writing tasks sound waves and comprehension tasks.

Rich Task:- First Term, the topic was about  how Animals and Humans Interact and how we depend on each other. Also how we care for our Pets. The children investigated various animals and their habitats and then they were set the task of creating and designing their own diorama as well as other smaller set tasks.

Term Two, the topic is materials and how they change and react. We have been using some simple science experiments to test out how substances change when something is added to it or something is done to it. They then have to record these findings. This topic involves some simple Kitchen Chemistry!

Term Three, the topic was about our community and the services provided in this community such as ambulance, postal service, hospitals, police, and fire just to name a few. The children also investigated what types of transport are available with in the community and the service they provide for us.

Term four is a Health topic, about food and its packaging. The children are concentrating on what labels and packages are used and what information is passed on to the consumer about the contents within the food item being purchased. They are also looking very carefully at foods that are good for us and the best choices when choosing a snack or meal. The children are going to design their own food package as a task and also create a healthy body book.
